How does photovoltaic technology work?
Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity. The stronger the sunshine beating down on the cell, the more DC electricity is produced. An inverter then converts this to AC electricity for use around your property.
Panels can be sited on roofs, walls or as free-standing,

As the cells only generate electricity when light shines on them, systems can be connected to the grid as a top-up facility where available, or used to charge a battery bank as a reserve for off-grid applications.
General site requirements
Siting your panels correctly can affect the amount of solar power generated. The frames of cells containing semi-conductor material can be accommodated by most types and ages of property. The ideal location would be:
- South-facing roof in good condition or a suitable ground space
- Roof angled at 30-40° (+/- 15°)
- Shade free
- A minimum roof area of 15 m2
- 3 phase electrical connection required for installations = 4kW
Most roof-mounted systems can be completed under Permitted Development, however if your property is listed or sited in a conservation area, potential planning issues need to be taken into consideration.
