Wind power

In practice

Mosscliff Environmental Ltd Offices are powered by a 1 Kw Wind Turbine. This gives sufficient energy for all the computers, printers, network and phones.

The energy is stored in a battery bank. It takes about two windy days to recharge the batteries for two weeks operation.

The wind turbine is not in a good location due to the surrounding trees. However it does what we intended it to do.

We can keep working even when the mains power fails—this is critical for a small business.

Wind turbines

Wind turbines are probably the most cost effective way of generating electricity via a renewable resource.

In East Anglia the average wind speed at most sites is between 4 and 5 m/s. It is therefore critical that the wind turbines are placed where they can make the most of the available wind.

For wind turbines to be effective they have to be located correctly, the key issues are:

  • Local Wind Speed
  • Obstructions such as buildings and trees
  • Proximity to neighbours (particularly with the larger turbines)
  • Height of the tower
  • Planning Constraints

We can help and advise with all of these factors. If we don’t believe a wind turbine will work in the proposed location we will tell you.

We have selected a range of wind turbines from 500w to 5Kw. The turbines we have chosen all have good low wind speed performance so if sited correctly should be able to generate reasonable amounts of electricity.
