Calculate your carbon footprint here!

The Carbon calculator facility uses online carbon footprint calculation tools enable you to calculate your own carbon footprint.

It is our understanding that this online calculator follows the methodology outlined in DEFRA's Voluntary Reporting Guidelines, and uses the most up to date emission factors. The only exceptions to this are some country specific factors (which are sourced for international sources such as the World Resource Institute's Greenhouse Gas protocol), and the Secondary Footprint calculations (which are based on estimates developed by Carbon Footprint Ltd).

The calculator uses emissions factors which take account of all greenhouse gases (i.e. CO2, N2O, methane etc.) released by the activities, with the results presented in units of metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent. In most cases that means the results will be slightly higher than if calculating CO2 only.

To include all aspects of your domestic footprint, you will need to enter information about your home, personal travel and lifestyle over the last 12 months (or time period of your choice).

Wind speed calculator

This quick procedure, also recommended by our partner, SolarVentus, will help you check out the average wind speed for your location, enabling you to see how wind generators in Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and beyond are likely to perform.

  • Enter your postcode in the Streetmap conversions tool
  • Make a note of the eight character LR reference that is returned, the wind speed database uses a six character reference so you will need to edit the reference, here is an example: Entering the postcode CM12 0ES into the streetmap conversion tool returns a LR reference of TQ660957
  • This reference if made up of two letters and two 3 digit references TQ-660-957
  • Remove the last digit from each set of numbers to give a 6 character reference TQ6695
  • You can now lookup the wind speed for your area, to go to the wind speed data base

How much can I save?

Solar electricity / Solar PV Systems: yearly return on investment

Examples of system sizes: 2.1kW 3kW 4kW 10kW 50kW

2.1kW, 3kW and 4kW system estimations are based on a medium house with 3300 kWh per year consumption and pays 16p*/kWh to the energy supplier, this table should allow a basic estimate of how much money you can save.

Explanation of terms

  • Import costs = Yearly power consumption multiplied by conventional energy supplier current rate
  • Generation Tariff = Government-set rate per unit for renewable electricity generated, paid by your energy supplier multiplied by the maximum power output of your system
  • Export Tariff = The conventional energy supplier presumes that 50% of renewable energy produced is exported to them for re-distribution - this assumption is due to a lack of an intelligent metering system at present.
  • Avoided costs / bill savings = The conventional energy supplier presumes that 50% of renewable energy produced is exported to them for re-distribution - this assumption is due to a lack of an intelligent metering system at present.
  • * indicates average current rate per energy unit charged by conventional energy supplier (sample EDF Energy@ Dec 2011)
